The Dreyfus Affair in La Prensa: journalistic modernization and sensationalism in Buenos Aires

This article analyses the La Prensa newspaper’s coverage of French Captain Alfred Dreyfus’ trial in 1899. It argues that the experimental techniques used by the newspaper to cover the trial allowed the newspaper to uphold its leadership in Buenos Aires´s journalistic field. The essay is divided into two sections. The first section examines how the news coverage was constructed. It studies the sources and journalistic techniques used by La Prensa to display and organize the vast amount of information related to the case. In the second part, the article describes the writing strategies employed by the newspaper to create emotional connections with the readers, increasing the attractiveness of the story for local audiences.
