FLENSBORG, Gustavo; SERNA, Alejandro y MANGE, Emiliano. BIOARCHAEOLOGICAL STUDY OFLA TOMA SITE (MIDDLE COURSE OF NEGRO RIVER, RÍO NEGRO PROVINCE). Relaciones [online]. 2018, vol.43, n.1, pp.1-11. ISSN 0325-2221.
La Toma site was excavated in the 1980s in a rescue situation and no systematic archaeological studies have been carried out. The aim of this study is to present the first bioarchaeological data and to discuss the post-depositional processes that intervened in the mortuary context, the burial modalities and the functionality of the site. In addition, the first radiocarbon data is informed. Results indicate that the main factor that affected the archaeological record of the site were farm machineries. La Toma assemblage is represented by a minimum number of 29 individuals, disposed as secondary and primary burials, of both sexes and different ages-at-death. This site presents the highest number of individuals from the middle course of Negro River. La Toma site is a persistent place, occupied as a base camp for multiple activities, where funerary practices were carried out during the final Late Holocene.
