Abstract To speak about semiotics and, more specifically, about sociosemiotics, implies assuming a position in an interdisciplinary field. Such a statement is founded upon the fact that in defining the social production of meaning as the object of study, the unit of analysis considered is discourse, in whatever signifying matter it may occur, and this circumstance propitiates disciplinary interaction. On the other hand, the methodological developments of semiotics -noted for their heuristic capacity- enhance its transdisciplinary function. Both the Semiotics Doctorate and the Social Discourse Program endeavor to deploy these potentialities in the field of social and human sciences.
