International remittances are a key factor in the issue of migration and development. Especially the sustained increase experienced in recent years, translates this flow of money in an important source of the balance of payments of the recipient countries. The aim of this article is to present the discussions on remittances and development in the recipient countries in the southern cone of Latin America. Theoretical perspectives have often fluctuated between macro and micro approaches. The macro perspective, mainly from Latin American discussions, evaluates negatively the effects caused by remittances and migration on sending areas. The micro approaches, mainly from the point of view of the neoclassical economics, have a positive view on the effects caused by migration and remittances.
