Abstract In Argentina the power that international organizations had on the conformation of the neoliberal state, especially during the 90s, is taken for granted. In this paper we analyze the state transformations around health and education in relation to the recommendations of international organizations from the '50s to the present. To do this we start with the conceptualization and characterization of international organizations as bureaucracies. We exemplify the above by exploring some of the institutional changes that took place in Argentina, and we briefly address the tensions and actors involved in the process of implementing the internationally disseminated ideas in the local context and issues.
