Abstract This paper explores the theoretical debates about the determinants of the origins, modalities, the paths and the current process of reconfiguration of welfare regimes. Particularly, this paper reviews the main theoretical approaches in Political Science, trying to highlight the relevance of the political causes: parties, ideologies, political interests and political competition. Based on this theoretical review, work address the processes of transformation of welfare regimes in the political systems in Latin America during last decade, seeking to identify the links between the political profile of the Governments, the orientations of the reforms and their impacts in terms of welfare and equity.
