Abstract This article rebuilds a significant and little-researched process in the history of Argentine student movement, such as the student conflict in 1995, in which takeovers of universities and massive concentrations took place against the approval of the Law of Higher Education by Carlos Menem's government. Focusing on the case of the University of Buenos Aires, the work establishes a periodization and analyses the students' mobilization repertoires, the scope of the demonstrations and the role of the different student groups. Likewise, the text examines the incidence of student protest in the maintenance of the gratuity and autonomy of Argentine public University, as well as its influence on the social conflict during the 90s against the so-called neoliberal policies and its possible impact on the growth of the opposition to menemism.
