In this article, we interrogate the rock nacional with new questions installed by the most recent research on music, produced in the local context. We make a history of the field of studies and show that attempts to stabilize this category are more problematic than is supposed. Likewise, we argue that literature works in a reductionist way the links of the so-called “rock nacional” with the market and with politics. We suggest that thinking about historical processes in terms of origin partly explains this problem and we offer analysis possibilities that would enrich our knowledge of the phenomenon.
