Resumen

ALVAREZ ROCHA¹, Pablo et al. Utility of a rapid survey for screening of depression in a cohort of patients with chronic heart failure. Insuf. card. [online]. 2013, vol.8, n.4, pp.165-170. ISSN 1852-3862.

Background. The depression has a prevalence of 25% in the population with heart failure (HF) that can amount to 50% in advanced stages. Depression adversely affects the prognosis of HF. Moreover, the diagnosis of depression is difficult in patients with HF by overlapping symptoms of both disorders. Objective. To determine the utility of depression screening survey with 3 oral questions for the rapid detection of clinical depression in patients with chronic HF. Material and methods. Transversal, observational and analytical study. Patients were included in chronic HF unit who had no previous diagnosis or were treated for depression. Depression screening survey with 3 oral questions was performed by physicians of the unit and, separately, blind, a psychiatrist applied the test for depression: "Patients Health Questionnaire 9" (PHQ9). They conducted interviews with a total of 142 patients and compared the results Depression screening survey with 3 oral questions vs PHQ9. Conclusions. Depression screening survey with 3 oral questions has a very good performance detecting patients with depression and is relatively efficient to screen out them, so it can be catalogued as a good primary test (screening), recognizing depression in patients with HF due to its high sensitivity
