Abstract

CORRAL, Pablo. Are statins hepatotoxic or hepatoprotective?: Bibliographical review and scientific update. Insuf. card. [online]. 2014, vol.9, n.2, pp.61-65. ISSN 1852-3862.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the Western world and Argentine is no exception to this reality. According to national statistics, more than a third of all deaths reported in Argentine are due to cardiovascular events. The introduction of statins as therapeutic tool in both primary and secondary prevention has managed to be responsible for part of the overall decline in cardiovascular disease in the last two decades. Statins have been the most studied and analyzed modern pharmacology drugs, demonstrating a very wide safety profile and effectiveness unmatched. The described adverse effects with these compounds have been thoroughly investigated, describing from myopathic syndromes to increase in new cases of diabetes. While statin hepatotoxicity has been widely described and analyzed over time has shown a clear shift in this concept, leading to raise not only the lack of relationship between these adverse effects and statins, but rather the potential hepatoprotective effect in different scenarios. The main objective of this review focuses on the analysis of the effects of statins on liver function.

Keywords : Statins; Hepatotoxicity; Nonalcoholic fatty liver; Transaminases; Liver failure.
