Changes in national and international context show the need to restructure the business of cattle, one of the main economic activities in Argentina. In this sense, this paper presents an economic analysis of the primary link of livestock chain, from a systemic and multidisciplinary optical. The methodology begins with a study of the area under analysis in order to characterize the production systems. The cost structures and incomes for each of the areas are determinate based in the study of the relation Cost-Volume- Utility by considering the productive system, the size of the farm, the technical- productive parameters and the sale channel. The results demonstrate that despite the importance of livestock in the national economy, this is not capable of generating a positive contribution to economic performance of farms. Generating the challenge of building sustainable competitive advantages based on increased in production efficiency and the development of an efficient cost structure.
