TUMAS, Natalia  e  POU, Sonia Alejandra. Years of life lost from cancer: trends and differentials by sex in Córdoba, Argentina, 2000-2009 period. SaberEs [online]. 2017, vol.9, n.1, pp.29-46. ISSN 1852-4418.

Cancer is a leading cause of death in Argentina. The years of life expectancy lost (YLEL) attributable to this cause can be considered as a suitable indicator of its impact on population. This study aims to determine the YLEL due to cancer (total and by specific sites) by sex; and to analyze the changes in life expectancy (LE) at birth, taking into account the cancer mortality contribution, in Córdoba Province (Argentina) in the 2000-2009 period. Cause-specific mortality rates and YLEL attributable to cancers were estimated, also the average annual percent change and decomposition in LE. Mein presented lower LE at birth that women (67.7 vs. 70.8 in 2009), although the proportion of YLEL by cancer was greater in females. Malignant tumors that caused more YLEL due to cancer in 2009 were: trachea-bronchus-lung in mein (0.30 YLEL), and breast in women (0.35 YLEL). Colon cancer presented an increase in YLEL in 2000-2009, mainly in mein. The YLEL by tumors of trachea-bronchus-lung decreased in mein (3.4% annual) and increased in women (3.6% annual).Taking into account the results of this paper it is recommended that efforts for cancer prevention and control prioritize those that most affects LE in Córdoba: lung and breast (in women), and colon (in men).
