Abstract

When in the context of Baroque magia artificialis, mythical models are called for to describe and explain optical phenomena, this reference to myth is assimilated essentially to the historical-cultural horizon of the emergence of complex devices of optical, artistic, technical, and scientific images. This is shown mainly in the continuity of older traditions belonging to the magic of image, in which the idea of 'vivification' or 'animation' of images is related in multiple cases to the mythical figures of the demiurge-artists, Prometheus and Pygmalion. Within Baroque Spanish Literature, Luis de Góngora's lyric poetry is that in which the mention of figurations of old mythology remarkably connects with an ample reflection on historical-cultural and mediatic processes of transformation, which also affect the literary practices and the author's lyric processes of representation. Within the frame of an exemplary reading of the celebratory poem "Hurtas mi vulto", this article intends to determine to what extent a specifically literary form of myth reception is outlined in the sonnet, by means of which the text belongs to the historical horizon of the arousing of 'visual culture' and of the Early Modern Age optical magic.
