In this paper we present the results of the study conducted on obsidian specimens, which constitutes the first record of this kind in archaeological contexts of the southern forests of the province of Tucumán are presented. These materials were recovered in stratigraphic layers of the first millennium AD of the Santa Rosa site, which is located at the base of the eastern slopes of the Sierra del Aconquija (Tucumán, Argentina). A techno-morphological analysis of specimens in conjunction with geochemic alanalysis using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) was performed to determine the geographical provenance of obsidian archaeological materials. Results determined that the sample raw material, exclusively consisting of debitage, comes from Ona-Las Cuevas quarry, located ca.270 km northwest from the Santa Rosa site, in the north of the province of Catamarca, in the southern Argentine Puna. The large quarry-site distance leads us to propose that the pre-Hispanic communities in this lowland area participated in stable interaction spheres with groups of widely separated areas, promoting the circulation and exchange of obsidian in the southern portion of the Argentine NW.
