Abstract Current archaeological problems need to generate data not only from the own discipline but also from the theories and methodologies of other disciplines. Diatomology, a discipline that is part of the Biological Sciences field, has proven to be an important tool for Archaeology. The diatom analysis have been applied in paleoenvironmental reconstructions, site formation processes analysis, the archaeological record such as the study of the provenance of ceramics, the study of prehistoric management of soil/water, in bioarqueological remains and, finally, in the conservation of tangible cultural heritage. The aim of this article is to present a critical review about the evolution and current condition of the diatom analysis in Archaeology, mainly in Latin American studies. We propose to discuss the potentialities and limitations of these studies, in order to offer a conceptual bridge that will serve researchers interested in working with these lines.
