Abstract

BERON, Mónica  and  CARRERA AIZPITARTE, Manuel. Raw materials and mobility circuits in northeastern Patagonia. An approach to the study of social conflicts from archaeological evidences. Rev. Mus. Antropol. [online]. 2019, vol.12, n.1, pp.22-16. ISSN 1852-060X.

Abstract The archaeological record of the Pampa Occidental sub-region presents a profusion of evidences of the existence of circuits of mobility and social interaction on a large spatial scale, among them lithic raw materials such as obsidian and quartzite. This paper discusses the possibility of considering the siliceous chert as another indicator of these interactions and the origin of some of the individuals buried in the Chenque I site. Chert outcrops of the study region have been detected in two sectors: Fresco Plateau and Laguna El Carancho. This rock has been used for the preparation of a variety of artifacts in various archaeological sites of the Pampean region including projectile points, some of which were used in situations of violence. The analysis of 12 projectile points from the site Chenque I (Lihué Calel department), allow to corroborate, through the macroscopic characteristics of the rocks used in its preparation, based on microscopic analyzes carried out on both outcrops, the use of sources of known supplies, as well as to postulate the existence of extraregional sources. In this sense, one of the projectiles, whose macroscopic characteristics are far from the Pampean sources identified, caused the death of an individual, whose mode of burial, isotopic values and trousseau elements indicate an Andean origin. In this work the siliceous chert of both sources will be characterized and its use in social conflicts of wide scale will be problematized.
