Abstract In recent years, several archaeological studies began to account for the presence of hunter-gatherer populations in the forest and forest-steppe ecotone that currently cover the southwest of the Santa Cruz province, Argentina. Currently available information corresponds mainly to the late Holocene and suggests a more complex picture of human occupation in the Patagonian forest than the previously stated scenario of low to no exploitation by these populations. In this paper, a comparative study of the surface lithic assemblages recovered in two wooded spaces close to each other in the southwest of the Santa Cruz province is presented: Laguna Cóndor and Puesto Aserradero. The results show two modalities of forest human use, in whose differentiation the presence of temporary and permanent water bodies could have played an important role. While Laguna Cóndor would have been visited on a frequently and planned manner, Puesto Aserradero must have been a place of circumstantial occupation.
