This review article on triticale comprises an investigation carried out along a period of twenty years. This cereal is a manmade species created a century ago with the purpose of joining outstanding characteristics of wheat and rye. These are basic studies on hexaploid triticale (the wheat progenitor is tetraploid) which show continuity between cytological studies and those related to the reproductive potential of this species. The review contains a chronological analysis of concatenated stages related with inter- and intra-variety cytological behaviour, environmental influence on the meiotic irregularity expression, direct (heritability) and indirect breeding of these characters, and microevolution. These aspects are important descriptors of materials with more than one genome and should be taken into account when a genetic breeding program is started.
