Abstract

SANCHEZ ANTILLON, Antonio. Argumentative analysis of two individuals, members of an environmentalist assembly, with the David Liberman Algorithm (DLA), on the speech acts level. Subj. procesos cogn. [online]. 2010, vol.14, n.1, pp.230-248. ISSN 1852-7310.

After making a presentation of the different ways in which power can be understood and of the characteristics of the language expressing it, the wish theory as theoretical framework of interpretation for this study is assessed. Secondly, the ongoing research project and scope of its first phase is presented. The discourse of two individuals participating in an environmentalist assembly is analyzed on the speech acts level with the David Liberman algorithm (DLA). The purpose of analyzing two actors in the same assembly allows to contrast the rhetoric expressed in their appeals. According to the results, person A's predominant use of the language of power manifests a vengeful and righteous ideal supported by language expressed in narrative, orderly fashion evoking empathic understanding. His final argument is an appeal against the government authority, considered antagonistic, and in favor of an organization based on natural regulation, implying total equality and no hierarchies. On the other hand, person B uses the language that predominantly implies duty and order, targeting an ambitious ideal with plans to access his rivals in order to govern. Finally, the article assesses the scope of these arguments, its similarities and differences. To conclude, the contributions of this study and foresight are precised.
