WOIZINSKI, Adela. Investigation on power strategies and discourse manipulation in a literary play -Richard III by William Shakespeare- as from an intersubjective point of view. Subj. procesos cogn. [online]. 2010, vol.14, n.1, pp.276-292. ISSN 1852-7310.

This article deals with the subject of manipulation through discourse. For the analysis of the subject, Richard III, a literary play by William Shakespeare, was selected. The sample chosen is a well-known scene, which consists in an apparent verbal duel between Richard, the main character, already exerting his power as king, and an ex-queen, victim of his abuses. This study is centered on the analysis of the resources, strategies and argumentations with which Shakespeare endows his character in order to both horrify and seduce his partenaire in the scene while driving the audience to experiment ambiguous and complex emotions. A play by William Shakespeare was selected because Shakespeare is considered to be the great writer on immediate political action and this play in particular was chosen because its main character is an expert in the art of persuading through discourse. The method used for this analysis is the David Liberman Algorithm (DLA), based on the psychoanalytic theory on drives and defenses. It was applied on the speech acts level.

Palavras-chave : Discourse analysis; Argumentation; Corruption; Pacts and alliances.
