SCILLETTA, Delia. Relationship between the results of the implementation of two instruments to the speech of a patient with self inflicted skin cuts. Subj. procesos cogn. [online]. 2010, vol.14, n.2, pp.275-283. ISSN 1852-7310.

The purpose of the present study is to compare the results obtained applying the three instruments of the method David Liberman algorithm or DLA (grid of speech acts, grid of narrations and computerized dictionary) to a sample consisting of the textual discourse of a patient who self-inflicted skin cuts. This study is part of one which aims to elucidate the psychic processes manifested during the moments preceding self-inflicted injuries. The sample consists of two sessions of an 18 year old patient undergoing outpatient treatment in a psychiatric institution. The method used in this study was devised to investigate discourse from the Freudian psychoanalytical perspective through the analysis of wishes and defenses. As regards the procedure the first step consisted in isolating fragments in which the patient refers to cuts and their previous circumstances and the application of the narration analysis grid. In second place the computerized dictionary was used for the study of word networks. Then a double study of speech acts was performed to determine which one is more useful to compare with the result of the analysis of word networks. Therefore the global fragmentation was named macro analysis, and then these same acts of speech were fragmented in shorter, internal sub-fragments; this strategy was named micro analysis. As product of the results obtained it can be concluded, in a provisional way, that some differences in the results gathered from the various instruments were manifested. Whilst in the analysis of narrations regarding the time of the cut and its previous circumstances more languages related to the body and to misleading or false situations prevailed, in the acts of speech other different languages predominated, which might indicate improvement of the condition of the patient during the session as opposed to the state demonstrated at the time of the crisis. On the other hand, the results of the analysis of speech acts (more linked to affective states) coincided with the results collected from the computerized dictionary application. It seems possible then that the latter may become dominant if the patient´s existing pathogenic defenses lose part of their hegemony.
