The authors examine issues concerning defense mechanisms, their categorization and types of classifcation and show different methods concerning their research. They concentrate mainly on the following methods: the DMT (Kragh, 1985) and the FKBS (Hentschel et al., 1998). Both these methods are described in detail. In the discussion section, results are critically evaluated and directions for future research are considered.
