In the present, well-known studies undertaken by the World Health Organization consider that the major premature mortality cause and peril to the person´s vital capacity is mainly cardiac illness in the first place, and affective maladies in the second place. Among the manifestations of affective pathologies, the bipolar complaint is one of the topics that arouse the most interest in the clinical setting as well as in the research and the theoretical speculation field. The contributions of neuropsychology to the understanding of bipolar disorder have been oriented to determine not only the compromised cognitive areas but also the persistence of the compromise in the different states of the bipolar disorder purveying an empirical base through transversal and longitudinal studies. The aim of the present work is to update the main contributions arising from researches that have tackled the subject from the neuropsychological standpoint, using specific measuring instruments. Also, the most important methodological limitations of different studies are presented and guidelines for future investigations are proposed.
