Resumen

VARELA, Berta et al. Comparison of ratings using the Defense Mechanism. Rating Scale before and after training in this methodology. Subj. procesos cogn. [online]. 2013, vol.17, n.1, pp.257-273. ISSN 1852-7310.

Methodology for the assessment of defenses requires special consideration since they are unconscious processes not easily observable or recognized. It’s necessary to count with scales whose measures allow qualitative as well as quantitative assessment. The Defense Mechanisms Rating Scales (DMRS) was finally selected since it fills these requirements. In the process of training in the use of the scale, pre and post training ratings were compared with Perry’, scale author. After the training sessions, almost twice as many defenses were identified (mean 28.5 before, 60.6 after) and there was a significant increment of 0.77 in the Overall Defensive functioning (ODF) in patients. Supervision of assessment by an expert before the beginning of the research plays an important role concerning the reliability of the data obtained.
