Objective: To describe and illustrate an instrument to detect the state of the defense at the para-verbal tonal level. Concept: the successful defense allows to preserve feelings of the self, keeping the conflict outside the ego. It fails when it cannot achieve this Its mixed when the conflict doesn’t reoccur and the ego maintains a neutral condition. Operationalization: we consider the high-pitched tones outside the tonal range as failures of the defense; the low-pitched tones outside the tonal range as a mixed state of the defense. Instruments: we apply the PRAAT to measure the pitch of vocals and an index to assess it. Procedure: we study speech acts with the DLA and the tonal level with the PRAAT + index. Example: a young person who consulted due to eating disorders and self-flagellation. Analysis: we compare 3 moments of a session. Result: The para-verbal tonal level detects the failure of the defense before the verbal level does.
