Resumen

AIAZZI, María T.; CARPANE, Pablo  y  DEZA, Cristina. Effect of salinity on plant growth of Atriplex cordobensis Gandoger et Stuckert from seed of different provenances. Multequina [online]. 2005, vol.14, n.1, pp.39-46. ISSN 1852-7329.

The effect of salinity upon growth of plants of Atriplex cordobensis Gandoger et Stuckert (Chenopodiaceae) developed from seeds harvested in three localities of Córdoba Province, Argentine was studied. Seeds were seeded in 15_4 cm diameter plastic bags filled with a 1:1 mixture of soil and sand and grown into greenhouse. Seedlings were irrigated with tap water until the age of 2 months. Afterwards they were watered with 50% Hoagland nutritive solution (control) or with 50% Hoagland nutritive solution added with NaCl to produce an equivalent to -1MPa (salinity treatment). Results indicate that plant growth responds to salinity treatment depending on provenance of the seeds. Total dry weight increased significantly under salinity treatment when compared to control in plants grown from seeds collected in El Desafío and Salinas Grandes. Meanwhile the contrary occurred with plants developed from seeds collected in Balnearia. In the provenance where dry weight increased under salinity treatment, the Na + concentration increases significantly in the aerial part of the plants but not in radical part. Depending on the provenances of seeds, accumulation of Na + ions in the aerial part of the plants seems to perform as a mechanism of osmotic adjustment to allow the water uptake as well as to promote the increase of total biomass (El Desafío and Salinas Grandes) or as a reducing of growth (Balnearia).
