CAVANNA, J. A. et al. Social-productive characterization of eight communities of small producers from Salinas Grandes, province of Catamarca, Argentina. Multequina [online]. 2009, vol.18, n.1, pp.15-29. ISSN 1852-7329.

Salinas Grandes contain a mosaic of different environments where the water, vegetation and fauna constitute important resources for the development and social reproduction of local communities. In the study area goat and bovine breed is made, with relative low carrying capacity conditioned by hydric and edafic factors. A rapid rural endogenous diagnostic was made, in participatory workshops, where communities' productive problems were analyzed, social and economic aspects of the families were stood out with structured individual inquiries and with non structured inquiries to the local population and sanitation agents. Observations of the houses and productive infrastructure were made with the local settlers. It is observed that the gross margins obtained from predial income, extrapredial income and autoconsumption, are considerable, surpassing $ 1.600 family per month. These incomes are given by the presence of numerous natural resources that allow local population to diversify production and diminish risks.
