Abstract

DAMIANI, Oscar  and  GARCIA, Alejandro. Indigenous management of water in San Juan province (Argentina): design and operation of Zonda channels system. Multequina [online]. 2011, vol.20, n.1, pp.27-42. ISSN 1852-7329.

Some centuries before the Spanish conquest there were several large, complex irrigation systems in San Juan. One of them was located in the Valle de Zonda. Its study shows the existence of a main channel approximately 10 km long and an extensive irrigation network that would have allowed the cultivation of much of the western section of the valley. In this article we describe the results of the survey of the system, and present information related to its flow, operation, and constructive characteristics.

Keywords : Prehispanic irrigation; Archaeology; Zonda; San Juan.
