Abstract
LAGRANJA, Elena Sofía; VALEGGIA, Claudia R and NAVARRO, Alicia. Feeding practices and physical activity among adults of a Toba population in the province of Formosa, Argentina. Diaeta [online]. 2014, vol.32, n.146, pp.35-41. ISSN 1852-7337.
Introduction and Objetive: the indigenous peoples of the Gran Chaco were mostly hunters-gatherers-fishers. Today, these people are going through a rapid transition to a market economy. This study is part of a project to evaluate the prevalence of cardiovascular disease risk in a peri-urban Toba population of the city of Formosa. The objective of this study was to describe the feeding practices and the level of physical activity of the population. Materials and Method: a simple descriptive, cross-sectional study between March and December 2010. We randomly selected 275 individuals over 20 (141 women and 134 men). Data was obtained from feeding practices and level of habitual physical activity. Relevant bioethical standards were respected Results: the results indicate that food is monotonous, based on stews and fried cakes, high in fat and mate or tereré, with few vegetables, fruits and dairy products. Consumption of alcoholic drinks is significantly higher in men than women. A sedentary lifestyle is marked in both sexes, but men show a higher level of physical activity than women. Conclusion: the type of food, hipercaloric, and the current low levels of physical activity contribute to an obesogenic environment, which forecasts a grim picture with respect to the risks of cardiovascular disease in this population.
