Abstract

PEREZ, María Claudia et al. Evaluation of treatment intensified with carbohydrate counting in a group of children with diabetes type 1. Diaeta [online]. 2015, vol.33, n.150, pp.21-25. ISSN 1852-7337.

Introduction. The findings by The Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) have shown that intensified treatment (IT), allows an improved glycemic control, avoiding chronic complications of diabetes. Objective. To compare the metabolic control in a group of children with DM1 followed in the Hospital Sor María Ludovica following the following scheme: Conventional Treatment (CT) versus Intensified Treatment (IT) with education in Carbohydrate Counting. Materials and method. a comparative, prospective, descriptive and analytical clinical study that was divided in two groups: IT and CT. Chronological age at debut (CA), height (H), body mass index (BMI) according to WHO curves, time of evolution of diabetes (TED) and type of insulin used were assessed. Insulins used in each group and changes in BMI, HbA1c, and the presence of severe hypoglycemia at 6 months of CHC were also analyzed. Results. The average HbA1c at start was 10.11% ± 2.51 and at 6 months 8.10% ± 1.77 in TI, decreased 2.01% (p < 0.0001). In TC HbA1C at the start was 8.86% ±1.87 and 6 months of 9.78% ± 2.18 (p = 0.0002), increased a 0.92%. Discussion. Results show the group of children in IT was successful in achieving a reduction of HbA1C without increasing hypoglycemias and other adverse effects
