SANDRA, Dra. Ravelli; BELEN, Lic. Bernal; MERCEDES, Lic. Bonin Chiogna  y  DENIS, Lic. Araya. Evaluation of protein consumption and its perception in water polo and underwater hockey athletes from Regatas Club, Santa Fe. Diaeta [online]. 2022, vol.40, n.177, pp.1-8.  Epub 05-Sep-2022. ISSN 1852-7337.

Water sports such as water polo and underwater hockey (UH) present alternating moments of high and low intensity; this is why adequate nutrition and physical preparation are essential. The importance of nutrition over physical well-being has been demonstrated; following growth, repair and adaptation, after exercise, influencing sports performance. The objective of this study was to evaluate protein intake and its perception in water polo and underwater hockey athletes from Regatas Club in the city of Santa Fe, in 2019.

Food record was used (3 discontinuous days) coinciding with training days. Interviews were conducted to determine the perception of protein consumption.

The average protein intake in water polo players was excessive with respect to their requirement. Half of the UH athletes revealed an insufficient average protein intake with respect to their daily requirement. The predominant protein source foods selected in both groups were meat, milk/yogurt, cheese, eggs and legumes. When contrasting protein consumption following daily requirement, no significant differences were found between the two disciplines. Regarding the perception of protein consumption, in both groups protein intake with respect to the real value of consumption was underestimated.

The water polo players present an excessive consumption of proteins with respect to their requirement; while in UH practitioners it turned out to be varied. Regarding the perception of protein consumption, intake is underestimated in both disciplines. The Bachelor in Nutrition must orient towards correct strategies, appropriate to the sports nutritional context.
