ABSTRACT: The purpose of this paper is fourfold. First, it undertakes to outline the main features of the mutuality of the gift as developed by P. Ricoeur in Parcours de la reconnaissance. Second, an attempt is made to clarify the symbolic character of the reciprocal ceremonial gift by applying the distinctive traits assigned by Ricoeur to immanent or constructive symbolism. Third, the so-called economy of gift is analyzed in the field of representative symbolism with the purpose of showing the critical function exercized by agape on the logic of equivalence. Finally, the general framework of Ricoeur's analysis of mutuality is examined in order to highlight the differences between his interpretation of asymmetry and Lévinas's version. The paper is rounded out in each of the four steps with a brief discussion of other phenomenological viewpoints that shed light on Ricoeur's claims.
