This paper is located at the intersection of two areas of study that, for several decades now, have begun to change our perception of the history of modern philosophy: skepticism and clandestine lite-rature. our work try to reconstruct the pathway that goes from disbelief to atheism. In the first section we reflect on Montaigne’s Essais (1580). In the second, we reconstruct Meslier’s reading strategies in his Mémoire des pensées et des sentiments (1729). Finally, we try a comparison between di-fferent passages of the Essais in which the skeptical doubt leaves us on the verge of disbelief, and the way in which those same passages are taken up and transformed by Meslier with the aim of extracting from them irreli-gious corollaries.
