Abstract

RIO, Marcelo; PATRICIOS, Sebastián  and  SAA, José. Knee injuriesdue to retrograde nailing in the femur: experimental study in cadaveric knees. Rev. Asoc. Argent. Ortop. Traumatol. [online]. 2009, vol.74, n.2, pp.148-151. ISSN 1852-7434.

Background: Retrograde nailing in femoral fractures is a treatment option. Probable articular injuries are not well described. The purpose of this study is to evaluate iatrogenic injuries resulting from this approach. Methods:We reproduced the minimally invasive surgical procedure in twelve cadaveric knees, and subsequently dissected them. Results: Chondral injuries were found in four knees (33%), three in the proximal ACL attachment, and one in the medial condyle. Conclusions: Iatrogenic injuries are highly possible during retrograde nail insertion; arthroscopic assistance is useful to minimize their occurrence.

Keywords : Femoral fracture; Retrograde nailing; Articular injuries.
