DOMINGUEZ, Mauricio; BORRI, Alvaro E; BAZAN, Pedro L  y  MEDINA, Martin. Enfoque terapeutico de las metastasis de neoplasias mielo-linfoproliferativas en la columna vertebral. Rev. Asoc. Argent. Ortop. Traumatol. [online]. 2016, vol.81, n.1, pp.7-13. ISSN 1852-7434.

Introduction: Myeloproliferative metastatic tumors (leukemia, multiple myeloma and lymphoma) are a problem that the spinal surgeon faces increasingly due to the longer survival associated with slower growth rates and improved antitumor treatments. Currently there is no consensus about any classification that allows for establishing a prognosis and a treatment plan for these conditions. Objectives: To apply and evaluate specific survival scales (ECOG and SCMM) and treatment scales (SINS) for this type of spinal metastases. Methods: The above mentioned scales, the visual analogue scale, and the Oswestry Index were applied to patients with histologically-confirmed metastatic spine myeloproliferative diseases in order to quantify treatment outcomes. Five patients were included, with a minimum follow-up of 6 months. Results: Four patients had multiple myeloma and one suffered leukemia; two were operated on and three were treated with radiotherapy, chemotherapy and corset; visual analogue scale score and Oswestry index improved in all patients, except one who died due to an extra-spinal complication at day 7. Conclusion: These scales are very useful for the therapeutic decision-making in these patients, because they are more specific for these metastases.
