Abstract

WILLIAMS, Fernando. Between State gridiron plan and naturalistic idealization: a landscape approach  to Welsh Patagonia. Poblac. soc. [online]. 2014, vol.21, n.2, pp.93-127. ISSN 1852-8562.

The aim of the present article is to study the question of territorial appropriation -both physical and symbolic- in Patagonia's first agricultural colony, a settlement founded in 1865 by a group of Welsh settlers. Problematizing the ways in which the territory was both perceived and transformed, the article focuses on a series of institutions formed by the Welsh, particularly, the Gaiman-based Chubut Municipality. The main argument revolves around the necessity of studying the kind of territorial management associated with these institutions from a dual perspective that is both political and aesthetical. In so doing, two disparate fields of  inquiry are brought to gether: public space and landscape representation.

Keywords : Colonization; Agriculture; Landscape; Town Council; Poetry; Photography.
