Taking as points of departure the problematic definition on Hispanic literary Modernismo as well as its debated relationship with the religious modernism of theologians such as Alfred Loisy and George Tyrrell, this article attempts to show first the causes and real reach of all those terminological ambiguities. Later, using Rubén Darío's work as main reference, the article proves that both modernisms should be understood rather as heterologous currents of thought whose common grounds are mainly explained by their shared roots in ideological liberalism of the 19th Century.
