Rubén Darío´s book of poetry Cantos de vida y esperanza (1905) is an opportunity to revisit the idea of modernity and the importance of Darío as a key poet who paved the way for Hispanic literary modernity as defined by the Mexican critic and poet Octavio Paz. This article shows how Darío established a literary dialogue with the classics through the Greek and Roman world and also through the Spanish writers of the Golden Age.
