Resumen
HOUVENAGHEL, Eugenia. Crossing national borders: Towards a"cartography" of Tomás Segovia's essays. Cuad. CILHA [online]. 2014, vol.15, n.1, pp.27-42. ISSN 1852-9615.
The Hispano-Mexican essayist and poet Tomás Segovia (Valencia 1927 - Mexico 2011) lived between different worlds: he was from Spanish origin and went as an exile first to France and later to Mexico, where he resided until he finally moved back to Spain and France in 1985. As we intend to increase our understanding of Segovia's identity construction in the crucial period (1970-85) that closes his stay in Mexico and precedes his return to Spain and France, we analyze the spatial dimension of the essays written in those years (Essays II). Methodologically, we rely on the concept of"scenography" proposed by Maingueneau. We argue that a spatial dimension is introduced into the essays through multiple and international co-enunciators. Various alliances and oppositions are established between these different co-enunciators, not in accordance with their nationalities or geographic positions, but as a result from their attitudes towards literature. Therefore, we conclude that the "cartography" of Segovia's essays is neither topographic nor static, it is"symbolic" (Maíz. 2008) and dynamic.
