Resumen

FERNANDEZ MICHELI, Silvia A.. Prostitución, entre lo imposible y lo prohibido: El  cuerpo peligroso de las mujeres. Mora (B. Aires) [online]. 2009, vol.15, n.2. ISSN 1853-001X.

One particular case, denial of medical assistance to a prostitute in the Department of Soriano, Uruguay, leads to reflection upon domination practices on the part of States, sanitary entities, medical doctors, as well the historical devaluation of women's work in general and the devaluation of sexual work in particular, resolved in a form of violence manifesting the permanent inequality existing between genders. This issue intend to point at the reporting and appealing to the justice system are not yet viable options in our patriarchal societies, among other reasons because assymnetrical and unequal relations between men and women are strengthened by myths and  shared popular beliefs which are socially legitimised; they are viewed as 'normal', they 'become natural', they are embedded in families, in communities, and in society as a whole, and they leave scars marking daily life for men and women. Violence against women thus takes on a public dimension, it spills out of private environment and is structurally embedded in society. It arises in multiple forms, it is silent, invisible, and it is nurtured through rough treatment, verbal aggression, discrimination, exclusion and poverty.

Palabras clave : Discrimination; Gender; Prostitution; Patriarchy; Violence.
