BERTUA, Paula. Relatos modernos, centramientos y descentramientos de género: Los Sueños de Grete Stern en Idilio. Mora (B. Aires) [online]. 2010, vol.16, n.1. ISSN 1853-001X.
In the mid XXth Century, Argentine society was thrown into confusion by many changes that affected socially and politically, also the private life of people, in particular in matters concerned relationships between men and women. In terms of gender determinations, certain feminine ideals socially desirable, linked mainly to the domestic sphere, still prevailed. A certain type of heavy journalism, such as female magazines of the time, in accordance to political and cultural levels, tended to (re)produce such representations. The objective of this article is to analyze one series of photomontages, namely Sueños, by German artist Grete Stern, originally published as illustrations that accompanied the column of psychological advice "El psicoanálisis te ayudará", 1948-1951, in Idilio magazine. Los Sueños were an experimental artistic platform where many disruptive actions were performed on gender assignments: dominant models and canonical writings were alterered, discussed, and reformulated. They were all patterns that tended to associate women with the most degraded, disturbing or backward looking aspects of modern society. Stern regained and adapted with new innovations tales that lived in the popular imagery of modernity -some of them of old tradition- that are organized around complex cores of meaning, and indissolubly link women with certain topics: mass culture, nature, primitivism and the figure of mechanical doubles of the human being.
