Abstract

Physical and/or mental weakness in relation to man is the feature for which women are and were identified as historically lower in most cultures. Despite having always been understood as natural, this feature is, like all the other features of the human body and personality, build and promote socially and culturally. This paper intends to show, from a historical perspective, the particular way in which the weakness of women has become in modernity one of its defining attributes, reporting its political and institutional dimension.
