Abstract

For the first time, silicified angiosperms woods with well preserved tissue found in Pliocene sediments of the río Dulce, close to Termas de Río Hondo, Santiago del Estero province are described. Three species of Fabaceae were identified: Paraalbizioxylon caccavariae Martínez, L., Menendoxylon mesopotamiensis Lutz and Amburanaxylon tortorellii Brea, Zucol & Patterer, and an undeterminated specie of Vitaceae, Vitaceoxylon sp. The first have been recorded in the Chiquimil Formation (Late Miocene) in the Santa Maria Group (Catamarca). M. mesopotamiensis and A. tortorellii were also recorded in the Pleistocene El Palmar Formation (Entre Ríos, province). The finding of Vitaceoxylon sp. is of particular importance as it is the first record of a Vitaceae wood from South America. The species here described are characteristic of a riparian forest which allows to confirm the subtropical climate for this xilotaphoflora.
