This article presents a study framed in Public Archaeology held at the Reserva Natural Boca de las Sierras, which is a provincial protected area located in the district of Azul (Buenos Aires province). The objective was to investigate the management, perceptions and stakeholders related to heritage, which was addressed by documentary collections, surveys and interviews. Protected areas are a valuable opportunity for regional development and to incite educational, economic, recreational and scientific initiatives, which places them, in turn, as relevant spaces for patrimonial activation. Despite this, many of them have administrative, legal and regulatory problems that become inoperative, as the case presented here. It was found that the lack of political will and poor communication at different scales represent two important problems. It was suggested, as an alternative, to promote citizen empowerment through proposals of public communication of science.
