OCAMPO ALVARADO, Juan Carlos; GONZALEZ CAVALLI, Emilio y DONCEL DE LA COLINA, Juan Antonio. Prison violence and precariousness from the experience of ex-convicts in Monterrey, Mexico. Zaranda ideas [online]. 2020, vol.18, n.1, pp.53-68. ISSN 1853-1296.
Statistics reveal the frequency and ubiquity of violence in Mexican prisons but its role in the cohabitation of inma- tes has not been clarified. In this respect few studies have considered the perspective of the inmates, leaving a gap in the literature. This article aims to analyze the role of violence in the social structuring within the prison space. We interviewed four former prisoners and a key informant. Based on their narratives we developed a systematic interpretation of their social and material reality. We conclude that control over resources, knowledge and other inmates, epiphenomena of the prison’s economic microsystem, condition violence by instrumentalizing and regulating it. However, violence is subordinated to the precarity of the prison space and its actors, linking violence bet- ween inmates with the institutional violence, which is less conspicuous but equally or more recalcitrant, exercised by the prison authority.
