Towards the end of the nineteenth century, the School of Law and Social Sciences of the University of buenos Aires started to grant awards to some doctoral theses submitted by those individuals interested in obtaining the degree of Doctor in Jurisprudence. Such Awards included, among others, the "Facultad", "Profesor Eduardo Prayones" and "Profesor Manuel Augusto Montes de Oca awards. The aim of this article is to study some of the aspects of the above-mentioned awards. To that effect, the analysis will first focus on an enumeration and description of the awards, the application requirements, characteristics of the awards, the steps to be followed from the recommendation up to the granting of the award, the subjects of the awarded theses and authors and the grounds for each award, among other issues. Through the awarded theses and the circumstances that surrounded their award, the aim is to provide a discussion of the knowledge of university life and the tuition of law at the University of Buenos Aires, as a contribution to the knowledge of the Argentinean legal culture of the past two centuries. The minutes of the dissertations, the Book of Awards, ordinances, regulations, and the minutes of the comisión Directiva and publications of the School of Law and the University of Buenos Aires are the sources of this article.
