This article aims to investigate the philosophical trends that had an influence on Vicente Fidel López’s outlook on history. In the first place there is an analysis of Diego Alcorta’s doctrines, and proceeds with the ideas of  Victor Cousin, François Guizot and Abel Villemain. Then there is an outline of the historical development of humanity as conceived by López, which to his mind is dominated by the law of an inevitable progress in history. What is finally emphasised is the historical role that, within this context, López assigned to the 1810 May Revolution in Argentina .
