The aim of this article -which is in fact a lecture delivered in the context of the commemoration of the eighty years of the foundation of the Institute of Legal History- seeks to evoke the teaching work and international projection of the Institute during its first twenty years, that is to say, from the beginning of its functioning in 1937 until the death of Ricardo Levene in 1959. To this effect, I refer in first place to the courses delivered at the Instituto; then I go on to address the issue of the lectures and work meetings that were held there, the ties with other institutions and the Instituto's international projection. I  conclude with some final considerations.
