DOMINGUEZ BENITO, Héctor. Frederick Pollock in Paris and the contested nature of comparative law. Rev. hist. derecho [online]. 2018, n.55, pp.1-12. ISSN 1853-1784.

The First International Congress of Comparative Law held in Paris in 1900 is reportedly considered by continental scholars as a foundational landmark of the emergence of the discipline. This article focuses on the participation in this event of the British jurist Frederick Pollock, in order to call attention to the differentiating development of anglophone "comparative jurisprudence" -both in thematic and methodological interests. Pollock's contact with, or influence on, other legal scholars is also tackled, highlighting their difficulty when approaching the "common law" tradition in an unbiased manner, as well as the importance of imperial matters. Finally, the attention paid by these authors to the entanglements between the comparative and the historical methods, are suggested as a potential point of departure for legal historians regarding current academic debates on the nature of comparative law and its future.
