GASTELLU, Sofía. A JUSTICE FOR THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT: THE JUSTICES OF THE PEACE OF BUENOS AIRES CITY (1821-1826). Rev. hist. derecho [online]. 2019, n.58, pp.61-80. ISSN 1853-1784.
This article studies the justice of peace in the city of Buenos Aires between 1821 and 1826. It analyzes this justice of proximity considering the governmental potential inherent in doing justice during the first half of the 19th century. It describes its institutional architecture based on the appointment and subordination regime of the justices of the peace. By means of a prosopographic study, their sociographic profile is identified, and the functions performed in relation to the construction of a specific type of “public order” are analyzed. These lines of analysis are drawn from basic questions: what was the role of the justice of the peace, and how it influenced the forms of government of the city? Four verbs describe the daily actions of the justice of the peace: to judge, mediate, recruit and choose, united in a cluster of functions that made possible the local government.
